Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about playing and hosting Bitwit quizzes.
Joining a Quiz
How do I join a quiz?▼
Go to the join URL shown on screen (e.g. bitwit.app/join), enter the 6-character code your host displays, or scan the QR code. You'll need a free Bitwit account to participate.
Do I need to create an account?▼
Yes — a free account is required so your score is tracked across questions. Sign up takes seconds via GitHub or email magic link.
Can I join on my phone?▼
Absolutely. The attendee view is designed for mobile — just open your browser, go to the join URL, and you're in.
What if I arrive late?▼
You can join mid-quiz, but you'll start from the current question. Any questions you missed won't be retroactively scored.
Scoring & Tiebreakers
How is my score calculated?▼
You earn one point for every correct answer. Wrong answers don't deduct points, so always guess if you're unsure!
What happens if there's a tie?▼
Ties are broken by total response time — the player who answered correctly faster across the whole quiz wins. Speed matters, so don't overthink it.
Does how fast I answer affect my score?▼
It doesn't change your point total, but your cumulative response time is recorded and used as a tiebreaker if two players finish with the same score.
When do I find out if my answer was right?▼
Immediately after you lock in your answer, you'll see whether you got it right or wrong. The host then advances to the next question when ready.
During the Quiz
Can I change my answer?▼
No — once you tap an answer it's locked in. Choose carefully!
What does the "waiting for host" message mean?▼
You've answered and are waiting for the quiz master to move everyone on to the next question. Sit tight — it'll advance automatically when they're ready.
The page went blank / I got disconnected. What do I do?▼
Reload the page. As long as you use the same account, your score and progress are saved server-side and you'll rejoin where you left off.
Results & Leaderboard
Where can I see the final results?▼
When the quiz ends, your personal score and leaderboard position appear on your screen. The host's display also shows the full podium — look up!
What is the podium?▼
The top 3 finishers are shown on a podium on the host's screen: 1st place centre and tallest, 2nd place left, 3rd place right. Everyone else is listed below.
Can I see the correct answers after the quiz?▼
The host can review all questions and answers in their dashboard after the quiz ends. Ask them to go through the answers on screen!
For Hosts
How do I create a quiz?▼
Sign in, go to your dashboard, and click "New Quiz". Paste any public URL — a blog post, documentation page, conference talk abstract — and Bitwit's AI generates questions from it automatically.
How does Bitwit read content from a URL?▼
Bitwit fetches the page at the URL you provide and extracts the main body text. It also discovers links on that page and can crawl additional pages from the same site to build richer questions. How many pages it crawls depends on your plan: Free gets 1 page, Basic gets up to 10 pages, and Pro gets up to 20 pages. Scripts, navigation, and footers are stripped so only meaningful content is used.
What is the snark level?▼
Snark level controls the tone of the quiz. Level 1 is dry and factual. Level 5 is maximum chaos — absurdist wrong answers and sarcastic feedback messages. Pick the vibe that fits your crowd.
How many players can join?▼
Player limits depend on your plan. Free accounts support a smaller group; paid plans unlock larger audiences. Check the pricing page for details.
Can I run the same quiz again?▼
Not yet — each quiz run is a single session. You can create a new quiz from the same URL if you want to reuse the content.
